Our Nation's Roll of Honor

Index to the Mid-Week Pictorial, 1918-1919

Index to the Mid-Week Pictorial, 1918-1919

Published by the New York Times between March 7, 1918-July 31, 1919, the Mid-Week Pictorial Roll of Honor depicts men and women who died while in service to the United States during World War I. In all, over 2500 portraits would appear between the magazine's covers. The first page, published on March 7, 1918, included twelve soldiers and two nurses. In time the Roll of Honor was expanded from one page per issue to two. In general, between 28-54 portraits were included in each issue.

In 1914, the New York Times began publishing Mid-Week Pictorial, which served a critical role in helping Americans understand the devastation raging in Europe through its photojournalism. As the war came to a close, the Mid-Week began transitioning to other photos features, serial novels, cartoons, theatre, fashion, and more, before it's demise in 1937. The Mid-Week Pictorial was published for more than twenty years before it was eclipsed by the quintessential American picture magazine, Life.

Each portrait includes the name of the individual, their hometown, date and cause of death. (Complete details are lacking for a few.) The index below is arranged by name, rank, hometown, state, date and cause of death and a link to the portrait page for the issue their photo appeared.
